Best Albums/EPs of 2016

I discovered a lot of good music in 2016. So much that I couldn’t even add all of it into my phone. Here are the best albums of 2016:

  1. Air For Free – Relient K

If me listening to this album on a loop for 3 days isn’t enough incentive for you to check it out, then I got nothing more to offer you. Top track: Cat

      2. The Home Inside My Head – Real Friends

POP PUNK PERFECTION. This album is one of the staple albums in my pop punk collection. Some of the songs are so perfect I can’t even explain their perfection. Top Track: Mess

      3. Intertwined (EP) – Dodie

Dodie needs to release a full length album. Stat. Top track: When

      4. Isn’t It Strange? – Lauren Aquilina

Who the hell broke Lauren’s heart?? Because so many of the songs on this album are super sad. This is a masterpiece to be honest, and it’s unfortunate that this is both her first and last album. Top Track: Way Too Good

      5. Holy Ghost – Modern Baseball

If you’re into The Front Bottoms, then you’ll be very into Modern Baseball. Top Track: Note to Self

      6. I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it – The 1975

The 1975 completely changed their style and it turned out for the better. There’s not a single song I don’t LOVE on this album. Top Track: Somebody Else

      7. Bry – Bry

Oh shit. Tall Irish YouTuber made a fantastic album? Do yourself a favour and check this album out, because it is an acoustic master piece. Top Track: You’re Alright

      8. Death of a Bachelor – Panic! At the Disco

This album wasn’t stellar, but it had many great tracks on it. Brendan Urie basically recorded everything himself which proves he is a man of immense talent. Also, his voice spans 5 (6?) octaves. Top Track: L.A. Devotee

     9. Beautiful Lies – Birdy

Who broke your heart Birdy?

Every single track on this album is huantingly beautiful, and many of them reference a relationship that didn’t end so well. However, many of her songs have the same type of melody, so it does get boring after a few listens. Top Track: Wild Horses

     10. Halloway (EP) – Tessa Violet

She is amazing. Tessa Violet has phenomenal songwriting skills. This EP is one of the greatest things I’ve heard this year. Top Track: Dream

Worst Songs of 2016

2016 was a year of great music but it also had some pretty shitty music, especially in the pop scene. Here ya go!

  1. Me too – Meghan Trainor

  2. M.I.L.F $ – Fergie

  3. Work from Home – Fifth Harmony

  4. Gold – Kiiara

  5. On My Mind – Ellie Goulding

  6. Treat You Better – Shawn Mendes

  7. No – Meghan Trainor

  8. Starving – Hailee Steinfeld ft. Zedd

  9. Don’t Wanna Know – Maroon 5 ft. Kendrick Lamar

  10. All We Know – The Chainsmokers ft. Phoebe Ryan

So yea…2016

As most people would probably agree with me, 2016 was fucking disappointing.

Although I wouldn’t say this year did nothing to help me grow as a person, it was still really a little shit.

Let us start off with the good things yea? Yea.

I turned 20.

I came out as pansexual and non-binary and I marched in the Pride Parade for the first time!!!

I’ve met people who I now consider to be a few of my best friends. I’m incredibly grateful to have such amazing people in my life.

I dyed my hair purple, then I cut it all off.

This year I began writing for my university’s newspaper “The Peak”. Learning to hone my non-academic writing skills has been fun, and having this blog has helped me grow in this aspect. So far, I have written only 4 articles for “The Peak”, and I hope to write at least one article every 2 weeks next term.

Over the break, I am working on the proposal for my new radio show. It will focus on discussing LGBTQ+ issues in the news, mental health problems in the LGBTQ+ community, and terminology to describe gender and sexuality.

This October, I got the chance to interview the lead singer of one of my favourite pop punk bands, “As It Is”. Honestly, interviewing Patty Walters was a dream come true. He was so nice and I actually felt incredibly cool really important. (In typical me fashion, I framed the photo pass).

My GPA has been slowly rising, and it will rise even more after I stop taking courses that fuck me up (french, economics…). I found out that I’m pretty decent at environmental courses, and I also really enjoy learning about all the different ways we’re fucking up our earth our impact on the environment.

Now onto the bad.

This year has been difficult for me mentally. The slight perpetual sadness I always feel morphed into full on depression in mid October. I didn’t know why I was crying every night and I didn’t know why I just couldn’t think anything positive no matter how hard I tried. I had suicidal thoughts whenever I stood in a high place, and being alone in my head was the worst thing ever.

I didn’t do much at the radio station this year. School got in the way, and the radio show I wanted to start producing got pushed back from March to now. Although my ideas are much better now than they were in March, so maybe that’s the silver lining eh?

I didn’t work on any music either. The EP I wanted to make is still only up in the air.

Hopefully next year will be my year. Who knows?
